Under the legal framework of Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), a WSH Officer is required to be appointed for a construction project with a contract sum of $10 million or more. The Specialist Diploma in Workplace Safety and Health (SDipWSH) is one of the qualifications recognised for the registration of a WSH Officer by the Ministry of Manpower. This course will also prepare the participants to take up employment as other WSH professionals such as WSH Managers, WSH Advisors, WSH Specialists, etc. The course contents have been developed to suit personnel who wish to work in the construction industry.

The Advanced Certificate in Workplace Safety and Health (ACWSH) is the qualification recognised for the registration of a WSH Co-ordinator by the Ministry of Manpower. This course will also prepare the participants to take up employment as other WSH professionals such as WSH Supervisors.

The Buildability legislation, effective since 1 Jan 2001, promotes the use of buildable design and new construction technologies. Under legislation, consultants involved in building projects with Gross Floor Areas (GFA) of 2,000m2 and above must comply with the minimum Buildable Design Scores (B-Score) stipulated in the Code of Practice on Buildability (COP). Since 15 Jul 2011, builders also have to comply with a minimum Constructability Score (C-Score) which encourages the use of construction technologies, mehods and processes to reduce the industrys reliance on foreign workers.Over the years, the buildability framework has been strengthened to require consultants to deliver more buildable designs upstream, and builders to adopt more labour-saving construction methods/technologies downstream. The course thus aims to keep participants up to date on the latest changes to the buildability framework and provides them with an understanding of the principles involved in computing the B-Score and C-Score.

This workshop will prepare structural and geotechnical engineers for the adoption of the Eurocode 7 in Singapore. After attending the workshop, the participants will be able to: 1) Appreciate the design approach based on the Eurocodes 2) Appreciate the geotechnical design approach based on SS EN 1997 (EC 7) and Singapore National Annexes 3) Apply EC 7 for the design of spread and pile foundations; retaining structures and slope stability and embankment.

The role of facilities managers is to manage the operations of buildings so as to minimise operational costs and the environmental impact of the buildings. To perform this role effectively in this competitive business operation, FM professionals need to be knowledgeable about business management, strategic planning, construction management and engineering towards sustainability in FM. The 2-day course aims to equip the participants the business case for sustainability; establish programs to reduce, reuse and recycle; analyse the life cycle costing of sustainable buildings and carry out building commissioning.

Under the ambit of Total Defence, the Civil Defence (CD) Shelter Programme is part of governments plan to build up Civil Defence preparedness in Singapore. To meet the changing needs and developments in the built environment sector, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have been working closely to continuously review the technical requirements of the CD shelters.This seminar will update industry practitioners on revisions to the household shelter technical requirements. To support the continuous drive for better construction productivity, participants will also be updated on the new initiative on precast staircase storey shelters, especially for residential projects using Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) concept.

The stakeholders of construction projects often incur liabilities due to their failure to recognise and comply with certain implied obligations which maybe arouse during the design and construction processes. It is, therefore, imperative for the project parties to understand the implied obligations and liabilities prior to the commencement of construction projects. This course will provide the participants with an insight into the obligations and liabilities of the key players in building and construction works, with focus on the Building Control Act. The course will cover the various obligations under contract, tort and statutory duty in building and construction works. The main focus will be on the regulatory framework of the Building Control Act and the recent developments of the Act. These will be discussed and illustrated with reference to the roles of various appointment holders under the Building Control Act with examples of local incidents and decided case law.

The increasing sophistication of property owners and their rising expectation for good governance in managing strata-titled developments could pose a daunting challenge to the management councils. It is important that members of the management councils of such developments are well-equipped with the knowledge of the regulatory framework and the related accounting and auditing requirements under the provisions of the Building Maintenance and Strata Management Act (BMSMA). At the end of the course, participants will gain an insight into the regulatory framework, the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders in strata developments, the procedure in conducting general and council meetings of the Management Corporation, the by-laws of Management Corporation and the accounting & auditing requirements that govern the managing of strata property developments. Topics on budgeting, maintenance, management and sinking fund will be discussed. A module on handling disputes is included.

Workplace Safety and Health (Risk Management) Regulations require stakeholders such as employers, self-employed persons and principals to have the responsibility of identifying safety and health hazards at the workplace and taking appropriate actions to eliminate the hazards or mitigate the risks associated with the hazards. Risk assessment and management is the key to reduce the risks at source.Participant who attends this course will have an in-depth understanding and knowledge on the concepts and methodologies of risk assessment and management. This course will also provide hands-on experience in the risk assessment for construction activities and development of risk management implementation plan.
