The construction industry is important to Singapores economic growth, contributing nearly 5% of GDP in 2015. During construction, however, projects could pose a significant risk to environmental health, potentially causing noise pollution or the spread of infectious vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. Construction practices that inadequately address these issues can have damaging implications, such as adversely affecting the health and well-being of workers on-site and neighbouring communities. A balance between operational and environmental concerns is therefore crucial to ensure that timely completion of projects does not come at the cost of endangering our health and environment. The scope of this course will cover foundational concepts relating to noise and vector-borne diseases, as well as key sources and health impacts relating to noise pollution and vector-borne diseases from construction sites. Management and control measures to address these concerns will also be discussed.

In 2018, Singapore encountered 3,885 fire outbreaks, with an increase in fires in non-residential and non-building premises. Efficient, effective and early detection of fires via electrical fire alarm systems can save thousands of lives and properties. The revised SS 645:2019, formerly known as CP10, provides requirements on the installation and servicing of electrical fire alarm systems in buildings. It covers fire alarm systems using manual call points, heat detectors, smoke detectors, flame detectors and video image fire detectors.Given the destructive nature of fires, it is crucial for professional engineers, contractors and architects to understand

Civil Engineers are highly demanded in Singapore. In fact, Civil engineering is vital to Singapores drive to creating a better built environment and liveable city. The development of mega infrastructure projects as well as re-shaping Singapores city landscape will require highly qualified engineers trained in civil discipline. As we build higher and dig deeper underground, there is high prospects for Civil Engineers^ to design, plan, build, manage and oversee the development of infrastructure/building projects. This degree programme is designed to allow both GCE 'A' level and diploma graduates a pathway to pursue a rewarding career in the built environment.
