The mandatory provision of civil defence (CD) shelters for all new residential developments started in 1998. Owners have the option of providing household shelter within the dwelling unit or storey shelter on each floor. The staircase shelter concept was later introduced to allow for alternative design for architects and designers with more design options in building development with respect to space planning, building configurations and apartment unit design layout.This workshop will provide participants with insights of good CD shelter design and construction practices in compliance with technical requirements. Salient changes and revisions made to the storey shelter technical requirements will also be covered in the workshop.
As the largest Pavilion at BEX Asia 2016, SGBC will feature exhibiting members at the forefront of the green building movement, showcasing SGBP-certified products and technologies that can help building projects get a higher Green Mark rating. Smoke control systems are necessary in most buildings to provide the occupants safe evacuation passages in an unlikely but possible fire situation, and to clear the smoke after the fire incident. An effective smoke control system is one which is well-integrated with other fire protection features such as detection systems, compartmentation and evacuation, forming the integral parts of a comprehensive smoke management strategy. This 2-day workshop, jointly offered by BCA Academy and Protective Technology Research Centre (PTRC) of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), aims to reinforce the concept of smoke management as part of comprehensive fire strategy development and the design strategy of smoke ventilation system. This knowledge will be useful for Fire Safety Engineers, Design Engineer and Architects.

This Executive Development Programme will address the importance of striking a balance between the sustainability of our physical environment as well as the conservation of our cultural and built heritage. It will provide a balanced understanding of the green agenda that goes beyond the triple bottom line to also address the cultural, spatial and technological issues that beset our built environment. In particular, this course will: demonstrate how the principles of sustainability can be applied in the conservation, restoration and adaptation of historic structures, focus on integrating the conservation of the built heritage into urban and regional planning as a means of enhancing heritage tourism, explore ways in which tested building and conservation techniques still meet emerging standards for sustainability and energy conservation and provide an insight into how indigenous building materials and passive design techniques help in retaining local cultural identity. The 5-day programme comprises lectures, walking tours and a workshop to provide participants with a deep understanding on sustainability issues such as reducing carbon footprint in both micro and macro scales, as well as issues on heritage conservation and restoration. In addition, the lateral lectures in the evenings will provide inspiring insights into the parallel between some other industries, such as haircutting, with the built environment sector.

Abstract: The concept of structural safety, and in particular how structures are designed under extreme loading conditions, has come under increased focus since the collapse of WTC buildings following 9-11 disaster. Since fires played a crucial role in the collapse of WTC buildings, building performance under fire conditions has attracted significant attention in recent years. Further, there is an increased expectation from society-at-large on better performance of buildings under fire conditions. Thus structural engineers are expected to be familiar with the design principles governing fire safety in buildings. This course will provide the essential background for fire design of steel, and composite structures. Both behavior and design aspects related to structural fire design of steel, and composite structures will be covered in this course. The course will introduce design provisions specified in Euro codes for fire design of steel, concrete, and composite structures. For engineers who are not familiar with the Euro-terminology, the course instructors will go through the relevant terms for ambient and high temperature design. Also, examples and case studies will be presented to illustrate the applicability of fire design provisions in practical scenarios. Both Professors have been working in the field of structural fire engineering since 1990s and have extensive experience in the analysis, design and testing of steel, concrete and composite structures under fire conditions.

In this seminar, SPRING will share on the benefits of the integrated assessment and funding support available, and several certified companies will also share on their journey. Key changes in the ISO 9001:2015 and the transition audit requirement will also be presented.
